Indian markets — NIFTY, BANKNIFTY & MCX
A 6¼-hour cash session, index options with exchange-set lot sizes that change by circular, and an MCX evening session that trades gold alongside London and New York. India rewards preparation: know the lot, know the expiry day, know the window.

When Indian markets actually move
NSE gives you one compact session with two decisive windows — the open and the close. MCX keeps going into the night, where Indian gold trades shoulder-to-shoulder with London and New York.
| Window | IST | UTC | What usually happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| NSE pre-open auction | 09:00–09:15 | 03:30–03:45 | Equilibrium price discovery — overnight global cues (US close, GIFT Nifty) get priced before the bell. |
| NSE opening hour | 09:15–10:15 | 03:45–04:45 | The decisive window. Opening range forms, gap logic resolves, and the first sweep of yesterday's high/low usually prints here. |
| Midday | 11:00–14:00 | 05:30–08:30 | Often slow, mean-reverting chop — the range that becomes afternoon liquidity. Europe's open (12:30 IST) can wake it up. |
| NSE close & positioning | 14:30–15:30 | 09:00–10:00 | Second decisive window: intraday square-off flows and expiry-day pinning. Cash session ends 15:30 IST. |
| MCX day + evening | 09:00–23:30/23:55 | 03:30–18:00/18:25 | Commodities keep trading after equities close. The evening leg overlaps the London–NY window, when MCX gold moves hardest. Closing time is seasonal (US daylight saving). Verify current timings with MCX. |
F&O lot sizes & MCX gold specs
In Indian F&O you can't size in shares — the exchange sets the lot. One lot is your minimum unit of risk, so the lot size is your position-sizing math.
Index F&O lot sizes
| Index | Lot size* | Weekly options?* |
|---|---|---|
| NIFTY 50 | 65 | Yes (NSE · Tuesday) |
| BANKNIFTY | 30 | No — monthly only |
| FINNIFTY | 60 | No — monthly only |
| MIDCPNIFTY | 120 | No — monthly only |
| NIFTY NEXT 50 | 25 | No — monthly only |
| SENSEX (BSE) | 20 | Yes (BSE · Thursday) |
| BANKEX (BSE) | 30 | No — monthly only |
MCX gold contracts
| Contract | Lot | Quote | ₹1 move |
|---|---|---|---|
| GOLD | 1 kg | ₹ per 10 g | ₹100 / lot |
| GOLDM (mini) | 100 g | ₹ per 10 g | ₹10 / lot |
What one lot really means
With a NIFTY lot of 65, every 1-point move is ₹65 per lot — a 100-point NIFTY move is ₹6,500. At 24,000 the notional per lot is roughly ₹15.6 lakh. That's the exposure behind a "small" one-lot trade. (Illustrative arithmetic using the lot sizes above — verify current figures.)
The free options calculator computes breakeven, max loss per lot and expiry P&L with these lot sizes built in.
The SEBI reality check
SEBI's own studies of individual equity F&O trading have repeatedly found that most retail F&O traders lose money. That is the regulator's data, not our opinion. It doesn't mean you can't trade derivatives — it means the default outcome is a loss, and only ruthless risk control, defined setups and honest journaling move you out of the default group.
Start with one lot, risk a fixed fraction per trade, and measure your own results before adding size.
How we trade NIFTY, BANKNIFTY & MCX
Smart Money Concepts translate cleanly to Indian indices — gaps, opening ranges and expiry pinning are just liquidity stories with local rules. You need the structure engine and the local toolkit.
Fixed lots force fixed discipline
Because the exchange sets the lot, you can't fine-tune size — you can only decide how many lots your risk budget allows and where structure says the trade is wrong. That's R-multiple thinking by construction: risk one unit, define it before entry, and let the lot-size math tell you if the trade is affordable at all.
Opening range breakout
The 09:15–10:15 window sets the day's range. The Indian Index Toolkit's ORB module marks it automatically and flags genuine displacement versus a sweep of the range extreme.
Part 3 Toolkit →Expiry-day tightening
Tuesday (NSE) and Thursday (BSE) behave differently: ranges compress, strikes pin, and the last hour turns violent. The toolkit's expiry logic adapts so you're not trading Monday's playbook on expiry afternoon.
Part 3 Toolkit →VIX gate & lot sizing
A VIX gate keeps signals out of dead-volatility chop, and built-in NSE lot sizing turns your risk % straight into a lot count — no spreadsheet between idea and order.
Part 3 Toolkit →MCX gold, global rules
MCX gold's evening session trades the same London/NY killzones as XAUUSD. Run the structure engine on MCX GOLD or spot gold and apply the global gold playbook after 17:30 IST.
Gold playbook →SMC SNIPER Part 3 — Indian Index Toolkit + the free options calculator
SMC SNIPER Part 3 ships a dedicated Indian Index Toolkit — ORB, expiry-day tightening, a VIX gate and NSE lot sizing — on top of the full Part 1 structure engine (BOS/CHoCH, order blocks, sweeps, premium/discount). Pair it with the free options calculator for breakeven, max loss per lot, theta and expiry P&L before every options trade.
